:: Starter Disengaging or Not Engaging Properly - By Adam Bell ::

This one is real quick and easy, just how we like it. Remember that your starter motor is pretty delicate inside and can be damaged if too much carb cleaner or AvGas gets into the motor housing. Just make sure to tip your motor/cage so that when you spray just a little cleaner into the housing where the starter gear engages the large sprocket, gravity will aid in keeping the liquid out of the starter motor housing. Do not over do it! You can really mess up your starter motor and then you are out $250.00 or so.

Clean The Starter Gear and Housing

  • Get some carb/choke cleaner
  • Locate the starter and housing where the starter gear engages the larger gear
  • Put an old rag under the starter housing to catch excess cleaner and gunk
  • Spray some carb cleaner into the housing onto the gear and shaft/spring
  • Let sit for a few seconds and tip the cage/motor so that all the gunk drains out
  • Repeat a few times until very clean

Now your starter should engage properly.

Note: Carb cleaner can really mess up the finish or laquer on a wood prop so protect thy propeller! AvGas could probably be used as well and will not harm your prop or other components. Bathing your motor in AvGas is a great way to keep it looking new and clean. (Thanks to Mo Sheldon for the AvGas bath info and cleaning out the starter housing)
